FOOTBALL TOUR
LEAGUE PLAYERS COMING VISIT TO ENGLAND APPOINTMENT OF MANAGERS TWO AUCKLANDERS SELECTED A special meeting of the New Zealand Rugby League last evening appointed two Aucklandors, Messrs. JA. Redwood and G. Grey Campbell, joint managers of the Dominion team which is to tour England this season. Mr. Redwood is chairman of tho New Zealand Rugby League and Air. Grey Campbell is chairman of tho Control Board of the Auckland Rugby League. The New Zealand team will leave Auckland by the Rangitiki 011 July 27. Considerable interest was taken in tho appointment of managers and there was a full attendance of delegates from affiliated leagues. The following nominations were received: —Messrs. J. A. Redwood, W. J. Taylor, G. Grey Campbell (Auckland), W. Holland (Wellington), C. Goodman (Christchurch) and W. C. Davis (South Auckland).
Before a series of elimination ballots Mr. Redwood appealed to tho delegates to give careful consideration to tho qualifications of each nominee. He said that a great deal depended on the delegates' decision and 110 hoped the final choice would have the full cooperation of supporters of the code throughout New Zealand. Mr. C. D. McCready (Canterbury) sought some information on the qualifications of one of the nominees, as it was unfortunate he was not well known to members. Mr. Redwood said that every facility had been given to each delegate, and it would be unwise at this stage to discuss tho matter further, seeing nominations had been in hand since April 15.
Four ballots were taken before the final selection of the managers. In thanking delegates for his election Mr. Redwood expressed appreciation of tho honour. He said that he would do his utmost to make the tour a success. Mr. 11. Doble expressed appreciation of the election of Mr. Grey Campbell on behalf of the Auckland League. The following selectors of the New Zealand team were appointed:—Messrs. J. A. Redwood (Auckland), A. T. McClymont (Auckland) and J. A. Amos (Canterbury).
INTEREST IN GAME CAREERS OF MANAGERS Mr. Redwood was associated with tho Richmond Club for a number of years as a junior player and played for tho • club when it first entered senior ranks in 1930. He was a promising forward but gave the game up early. He then took a prominent in "the administration of the Richmond Club and during his term as president the club was placed 011 a sound basis. . Air. Redwood also -represented his club as a delegate to the Auckland Rimby League ,'ind in 19.16 was tlio West Coast (South -Island) delegate to the New Zealand Rugby League Council. Ho has been president ot the controlling body for the past two vears and was one of tho managers ot the New Zealand team which, toured Australia last season. In business ho is a company manager. . ■ Mr. Grey Campbell has done invaluable work for the code, not only m Auckland but also for affiliated leagues. The progress made by the game in Auckland during the past six rears and the erection of the new grandstand at Carl aw Park are duo to a largo extent to his administration as chairman of the Auckland Rugby League. He has taken a prominent part in pubic afTairs having been a member of the Auckland City Council and Iransport Boa rd. . . Mr Campbell is. at present a member of the Auckland University College Council. Rome years ago ho was entrusted with a comprehensive report on the administration of -the Auckland Hospital. He is one of the directors of the Mnssov Agricultural College. Palmcrston North, and is an accountant by profession.
