TEACHERS' SPORTS

TRAINING COLLEGES AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON CRICKET,' SWIMMING, BASEBALL There was a large attendance of present and past students of the Auckland Training College and visitors at the college grounds to witness the first day's competitions between the Auckland and Wellington Colleges in their Easter sports tourney. Keen interest was taken in the cricket match, in which, at the drawing of stumps, Auckland had a lead of eight runs on tho first innings. The wicket was fast, but the ball was inclined to keep low. The fielding of both sides was keen and very little was given away. Stevens, of Auckland, impressed with Rood stroke play in carrying his bat for 42 runs.

For the first time baseball was played as part of the inter-collegiate competitions and drew a large attendance of spectators. Tho local side was superior to Wellington and scored an easy victory. Tho Auckland pitcher, Shanks, was mainly responsible for keeping the Wellinnton batters pinned down, while excellent fielding, with Young taking good catches in the outfield, stopped the running between bases. Ryalls ■ and Mason scored "homers." Liddel at first base for Wellington dismissed several Auckland batters with sound catching. Hanlon and Todd showed out with safe fielding. Keen competition was witnessed in the swimming events. The standard of diving was exceptionally good, and although Auckland gained first and third places, there was a very small margin between the competitors. The novelty events also created considerable amusement. Auckland gained an early lead In points and maintained it throughout the day, finishing with 40 points to Wellington's 24.
