ELLERSLIE AFFAIRS

ABATING DOG NUISANCE MEDICAL OFFICER'S REQUEST Steps to abate a nuisance and menace to public health alleged to be created by dogs at large were taken by the Ellerslie Borough Council last night when it received a report from tho Medical Officer of Health, Dr. T. J. Hughes. He stated a petition complaining of conditions bad been received from a number of Ellerslie shopkeepers. Tho position had been investigated and the complaints were upheld by the inspector. Tho medical officer recommended that a by-law, similar to that obtaining in other districts, be adopted. That would provide that in certain streets all dogs would require to he under proper control. The town elei;k, Mr. J. W. Carr, was instructed to draft a bv-law on those lines.

Objections to the curtailment of the number of playing days for the coming football season were voiced by a deputation from the Ellerslie League Football Club. Members stated that for the past 14 years the club had been allocated alternate Saturdays during the season. The proposed allocation of one Saturday in ( three was considered unfair. The club had seven teams and over 100 players who were all local residents. The allocation of the ground for dog-racing was not in keeping with the national physical fitness campaign. The council decided to defer consideration pending replies from the other bodies concerned in the proposed allocation of the ground.
