THE HOMER TUNNEL
DRIVING OF HEADING WORK DURING WINTER DECISION FOR MINISTER [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DUXEDIN, Tuesday The possibility of continuing work on tho driving of the Homer tunnel heading during the winter will be investigated by the Minister of Public Works, tho Hon. R. Semple, when ho visits tho Homer saddle to-morrow. Tho Minister Btated in an interview that if it wero found possible to keep tho work going during the winter with safety progress could be expedited to a great extent. A considerable amount of avalanche protection work has been carried out at the tunnel mouth during the past year, and the extent to which this has been done will probably influence the Minister in making his decision after ho inspects the work. The driving of tho bottom heading, which is actually a smaller tunnel, has now proceeded beyond half-way, and when this has been finished rt will permit of much greater speed in tho excavation of tho tunnel itself.
