FEARS FOR THE FATE OF MEMEL The seizure of Memel by Germany within the next few days is predicted in cablegrams from Europe. Sovereignty over the town and territory of Memel was renounced by Germany under the Versa,lies Treaty The area was governed for the Allies, under a High Commiss.oner, until 1923. when it was invaded and occupied by the Lithuanians Sovereignty was transferred to Lithuania under a Convention signed in Paris in 1924. The Polish Corridor, formerly German territory, was ceded to Poland under the Versailles Treaty. Under the same Treaty Danzig (and territory) was set up as a free city under the protection of the League of Nations.
