NEW AWARD PROCEEDINGS 8000 MEN INVOLVED LOWER PAY COUNTER-CLAIM [BY TELEGRAPH —FKF.SS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Tuesday Affecting more than 8000 workers, negotiations were commenced in Conciliation Council to-day for a new Dominion award to cover timber workers. Three days have been set down for the hearing, Discussions to-day centred entirely around interpretation of clauses. There is little variation from the existing award in the new claims and the counter-claims regarding hours of work, but an average reduction of l£d an hour in the existing rates of pay is being sought by the employers. The workers are asking for an average all-round increase of 3d an hour and increases in holidays. The dispute is the first heard in Wellington for many years in which the employers have sought a reduction in wages.
