THROWING THE HAMMER

CHALLENGE AT HAMILTON A ,special feature of the floodlight carnival and gymkhana held at Hi7iemoa Park, Hamilton, last u-eek, in conjunction with the Physical Fitness! Week was a challenge issued by Mr. ! F. Kindlny, deputy-mayor of Hamilton, j and champion of Northern Scotland in 1912, to Constable G. 'fait, the New Zealand police field events representative at the Police Games in Sydney last year, in the throwing of the 28lb. hammer. Although the contest was an impromptu one, and neither of the competitors had been in training, the competition was keen. During the early throws Findlav was leading, but in the six-throw contest Tait won, his best effort being 38ft., as compared with his opponent's 36ft. llin. Mr. Findlav, who has always taken a keen interest in amateur athletics in Hamilton, was a member of the New Zealand Army athletic team which competed at Stamford Bridge, London, ; after the war.
