HARD-COURT TENNIS
NGATIRA DEFEATS WEST END In the A grade hard-court final between Ngatira and West End there was a keen struggle, which was not decided until tlie combined doubles had been played. The West End team, led hv J. T. Mavson, was superior in the men's events, but the Ngatira ladies, led by Mrs. Stafford and Mrs. Pennell. squared the results, and Ngatira, taking the two combined events, won tlie championship. Rioden played quite well against Mavson, and most of the rallies were well contested. Hoys was noticeably better overhead than Sadgrove and also a little steadier. The former won in two sets at 6—4, 6 —4. Fortunes fluctuated in the first men's doubles, in which Rioden and Sadgrove did well to take a set from Mayson and Boys. The West End pair were, however, definitely superior in the third. The most exciting match of the day and the one which decided the contest was tliat between Reid and Mrs. C'ouzens and Cornes and Mrs. Orr. The Ngatira pair got the first set at 6—3 and just managed to win the second at 6 —5 after a number of deuces.
