V. BOOT'S WALKING EXERCISE "Walking is the foundation for success as a middle-distance runner," said V, P. Boot, Empire and New Zealand half-mile champion, in a recent interview. "Walking increases stamina and builds up ieg and body muscles," ho said. "In the course Of a year I walk more than 2000, miles. Each week-end I average 30 miles over the hills. If I didn't I would find it necessary to train five nights and race on Saturday to keep fit." Boot emphasised the importance of balance. He suggested walking a straight line and placing one foot in front of the other. Two or three minutes' deep breathing before and after training was also recommended.
