FRIENDLY SOCIETIES
THE FUTURE NOT HOPEFUL SOCIAL SECURITY'S EFFECTS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS association] DUNEDIN, Tuesday A statement that nothing could be learned of the Government's social seouritv intentions, repeated requests for enlightenment bringing evasive replies, was made by the local secretary of the A.0.F., who stated that it was almost impossible to enlist new members, and that' the future of friendly societies was not hopeful. During the first year after the security scheme was announced, it was stated, the new membership roll was down 50 per cent, while resignations and cancellations were even higher. Facts that disturbed members were the obligation to pay full wage tax and the fear that the initial payment would later be increased.
