WORKERS' POSITION
INTERPRETATION SOUGHT A joint application for an interpretation of two awards was brought yesterday before Mr. J. A. Gilmour, S.M., who acts with the delegated authority of the Arbitration Court. Mr. W. 11. Tuck appeared for the Furniture Trades Employees' Union, and Mr. I. C. Howard for the Farmers' Trading Company. The question at issue was whether several men employed by the Farmers' Trading Company keeping steam up in a boiler and attending to a kiln used for drying timber for the furniture factory carao under the furniture trades award or the timber workers' award. Mr. Tuck contended that the men belonged to the furniture trade because their work was incidental to the furniture industry, but Mr. Howard argued that they were timber workers because the timber workers' award made special provision for this type of work. The magistrate reserved his decision.
