FINANCES OF THAMES
SPECIAL RATE INCREASED EFFECT OF RISING COSTS [jlY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] THAMES. FiVlay A special meeting of the Thames Advisory Committee was held last evening to consider the estimates for the coming financial year. The Mayor, Mr S. Knsor, who presided, spoke of the effect of rising costs and wages and said the difficulties that the commissioner had to meet in consequence were increased. Owing to rising costs it had been found necessary to raise the special rate from 8d to Is. It was estimated that the increase in the hospital levy was equal to a penny rate. The commissioner, Mr. A. L. Bourk, said he hoped the ratepayers would appreciate the difficulties gf the borough, but if their demands were reasonable he hoped to get through on the estimates. On the motion of the Mayor the committee adopted the estimates and congratulated the commissioner upon the manner of their preparation and presentation.
