Friday A brill:iant innings by J. fi- Ken. the Canterbury captain, was the outstanding performance in the first day's play in the cricket match between Sir Jrlien Calm's touring team and Canterbury, which was commenced at Lancaster Park to-dav. Kerr's display was reminiscent of the brilliant form ho displayed a< few years ago, which made him one of the outstanding batsmen in the Dominion. Canterbury at the end ot the day's play had made 415 for the loss of eight wickets find, if high scoring continues, it will be very doubtful whether the match can#be finished in three days. Others vtho batted well were R. E. .J Menzies and I. B. Cromb. On the easy wicket none of the Canterbury batsmen found the bowling really difficult, and only one so far has not reached double figures. The wicket was made for batsmen and the bowlers had a hiU-d task in keeping runs down. The woather was brilliantly fine, with a light breeze from the north-east, and there wits a good crowd present considering it was an off day. The gate takings amounted to £l2O. Bowling.—Watts took two wickets for 81 runs., Heane none for 17, Jackson none for 35, Walsh three for 112, Smith one for 78, Mudge two for 80.
