MILD TEMPERATUBES

MAINLY FINE CONDITIONS The weather report and forecast for . New Zealand issued by the Government meteorologist last evening were as follows: —A very deep depression crossed the Dominion last night and is being followed by a disturbance of the trestorly type from the south Tasman Sea. The forecast is for winds between north, west and south-west, mainly light to fresh north of Taranaki and Hawke's Bay, hut moderate to strong, thence southward and rising to gale force in exposed positions. Seas rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, moderate to rather rough north of Cape Egmont, and elsewhere slight to moderate, but with a decreasing southerly swell south of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea: Winds between north-west and southwest, light to fresh in the northern portion, with moderate seas, but strong to gale force in the southern portion, with very rougli seas. Scattered rains are probable in western districts, more especially of the South Island and in the far south, but the weather otherwise is likely to be mainly fair to fine, with mild temperatures. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST MAINLY FAIR TO FINE The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Light to fresh winds between south-west and north-west. A few isolated showers are possible, but the weather for the most part is likely to be fair to fine and mild. Seas moderate to rather rough at times on tho west coast, slight to moderate on the east coast. WEEK-END WEATHER Auckland. —Fine weather with a fresh south-west wind ruled on Saturday. Conditions yesterday morning were showery with a moderate westerly wind, but the afternoon and evening were fine with a light south-west wind. The maximum temperature was 72 degrees and the minimum 58 degrees. Barometric pressure fell during the period, but began to recover last night. Barometer, midnight, rising .. 29.55Jn. Midnight, Saturday .. 29.87 in. Wellington.—On Saturday a boisterous northerly gale blew throughout the day. Several gusts of over 70 miles an hour were recorded at Kelburn. a maximum of 77 miles an hour arriving just about midnight. The day was overcast and rainy. Sunday was sunny, with a moderate northerly breeze. The maximum temperature on Saturday was 60.2 degrees and on Sunday 68.0 degrees. At 3 p.m. on Sunday the barometer reading was 29.663 in. Christchuroh. —A gale from - the north-west early on Saturday morning subsided later. The day was very warm, with bright sunshine, and even at midnight the temperature was 74 degrees. Sunday was brilliantly fine and warm, with a strong north-easterly wind. Th 9 barometer at 5 p.m. read 29!67in.

Dunedin.—The highest temperature recorded since last summer was registered on Saturday, when the thermometer touched 81 degrees. A \farm north-west wind made conditions extremely sultry. About 10 p.m. a strong southerly gale got up. The barometer fell steadily to 28.90 in. at 6 p.m., but rose to 29.30 in. at midnight. Sunday was warm and sunny. There was a fresh breeze from the north-east, which kept the temperature down to 71 degrees. The barometer was steady at 29.48 in. ..
