MAORI EEL BASKETS
SOCIETY WANTS SPECIMENS Tho council of tho Wellington Acclimatisation Society recently decided to obtain a number of Maori eel baskets, or hinaki, as the Maoris call them, for setting in the rivers to trap eels which take such heavy toll of trout. Mr. A. Seed reported to the council that it had so far been impossible to obtain one hinaki, let alone a number of them. The secretary, Mr. E. J. C. Wiffcn, said that the society's rangers had been instructed to endeavour to find out where Maori eel baskets could be obtained, but so far had been unsuccessful. It was decided to approach the director of tho Auckland Museum to see if a copy of a hinaki could be procured and a ranger was instructed to inquire what had become of the eel baskets which had been used by the now defunct Wairarapa Canning Company.
