STUDIOS IN BRITAIN During 1937 the gross output value of the cinematograph film trade of Britain was £7,163,000; costs were set at £2,286,000, leaving a net output valued at £4.877,000. The Board of Trade. Journal has published provisional results of the first inquiry under the Import Duties Act, 1932. The number of returns received was 134. As the production of films is not always completed in one year, the returns were divided into sections covering films produced wholly in 1937, completed but not wholly produced in that vear, and those begun but not finished. Figures were given of the different types of films made and the numbers of artists employed. Detailed figures were given of persons employed in the week ended October 16, 1937. There were two boy and four girl artists under 18 and 3702 men and 417 women. Other staff arid operatives brought the total to 9529. An index of how employment fluctuated month by month during the year showed that in January, 1886 artists were at work; in September there were 4172 Bv December the number had dropped to 1874, giving a monthly average for the year oi 2503 artists and 2607 operatives.
