FRENCH EDITION
"MAORI, PAST AND PRESENT" Cajitain Donne has just turned eighty, as alert, we hear, as entertaining and,as frank as ever. He is by way of creating a New Zealand record with his book, "The Maori, Past and Present.'' It ran through a London and a New York edition, and just before Christmas appeared in French,(translated bv M, Fain. Payot of Paris have included it in their "Collection de Documents ot do Temqignages pour Servi:r a l'Histoire da Notre Temps." The subject matter is well known and needs no further recommendation. Its French dress is quite becoming, except for the paper cover, which disfigures most French publications. I detected only one misprint in a Maori name. The translator, who himself has something of a reputation, has done his work well, although his method of translating all translatable place names is not always pleasing. Baio des lies is not so bad, but Baie d'Abondance must be censured.
"Mpeurs ct Coutumeg des Maoris," by T. E. Donno. Translated by M. Fain. (Payot, Paris.): V •: ■ ,
