From a splendid start, Shamrock was first away, and was closely followed by Marianne, Meinutu, St. George, Lanai, Y aalele, Manoa, A rime, Jennette, Malvina, Mercedes, Taree, Manuia, Mancne,Riptide, Limerick and Mauu. Maratea was 40s late. Oil tho Watchman, Joanetto took charge, with Lanai, Shamrock, Arline and Irina following in that order. Tareo, which was sailing fast with tho aid of her big leader, tried to pass Irina to windward near tho Watchman, hut Irina held her ground. At the top mark, Lanai had a lead of lis from Jeanetto. Irina was third round, 10s further away. Then followed Arline 33s after Irina, with Shamrock, Riptide, St. George, and Taree all within 32s of ono another. Malvina was another 30s further away. Lanai was making splendid progress on the lead down the harbour until she broke he r mast when oft' tho Watchman. This left Jeanette out in front, with St. George, Arline, Irina, Riptide, Taree, Malvina and Manene following in that order. By this time the fleet was stretched out over a good half-mile. St,, George was slowly gaining on Jeanette.

Jeanette had a lead of 16s from St. George as the boats crossed the line for the run to the mark in Shoal Bay. Arline was 3.9s astern of St. George at this stage, with lliptide 9s away; then followed Vaalele, Taree and Malvina, 30s only separating the last three boats. St. George next set a huge spinnaker and she flew past Jeanette. The Auckland boat, however, was not to be outdone. She maintained the windward position, and! a little later ran up level with St. George. Mzilvina Withdraws Malvina had trouble with her ringtail, resulting in one of her crew being tossed overboard. An effort was made to pull the hand on board, but without success. A launch made the rescue, and Malvina withdrew from the race. Meanwhile St. George and Jeanette ran for the buoy, the Sydney boat making the turn 4s ahead'. Taree followed 24s after Jeanette, with Riptide another 12s further away. Then came Arline, Irina, Vaalele and Manene. It was a beat back to the starting line, and Jeanette passed St. George on the first board. On the next, however, the positions were reversed, St. George crossing to windward of Jeanette. A fishing boat crossed the bows of Taree. and she lost several seconds through having to partly square away to avoid an accident. End of First Round

The times on completion of the first round were:—St. George, 4h 0m 3s; Jeanette, 4h 0m 16s; Taree, 4h Om 41s; Ai'line, 4h lm 3s; Irina, 4h lm 545; Vaalele, 4h 2m; Riptide, 4h 2m 275; Mariene, 4h 3m 20s; Limerick, 4h 3m 275; Mercedes, 4h 4m 14s; Manu, 4h 4m 365; Memiitu, 4h 4m 51s; Surprise, 4h'sm 6s; Ma mar u, 4s 6m 4s; Shamrock, 4h 6m S!2s; Ponty, 4h 7m; Maratea, 4h 7m 1,0s; Manaia, 4h 8m 40s; Marianne, 4h 10m; Miracle, 4h 10m 2s, Spinnakers were earned well forward and Taree was rapidly overhauling Jeanette, which lost her spinnaker boom overboard and was passed by Taree. St. George was now well in the lead and, with Taree holding second position, it appeared that the Sydney boats would hold their own for the remainder of the course.!

Rounding the top mark the times of the leading boats were: —St. George, 4h 12m 40s; Taree, 4h 13m 14s; Jeanette, 4h 13rri 235; Arline, 4h 14m; Vaalele, 4h 14m 31s; Riptidt, 4h 14m 555; Irina, 4li 15m 13s; Limerick, 4h 16m 9s; Manime, 4h 16m 12s. Reducing the Lead Jeanette, without her leading jib, delighted her supporters by passing Taree, and, although St. George had meanwhile opened up a big lead, Jeanette was gradually gaining oil' the Sydney boat. Below the Watchman Vaalele overhauled Arline. Jeanette had .spinnaker trouble on the final run to Shoal Bay and lost a few seconds before she got going St. George held her lead and, although she was over 30s ahead of Jeanette when she arrived at the buoy, she lost her position through coming round the mark head to wind instead of gybing round. Jeanette, on itlio other hand, made a good gybe, and, heading St. George, she improved her position on the beat to the finishing line. Taree was third round tho Shoal Bay mark, 18s after Jeanette, and then followed Vaalelo and Arline. REVISED PLACINGS FOUR DISQUALIFICATIONS MANU LEADS ON POINTS FINAL RACE THIS AFTERNOON Following tlic receipt of ft report from the umpires that Jeanette had broken the rules in attempting to force an overlap at the Shoal Bay mark in the first round, when not entitled to do so, Jcanetto was disqualified. , Menmtu and Limerick were also disqualified for a breach ol' the same rule, and Miracle was disqualified for failing to keep clear of another boat when in the weather position. The final race will be sailed to-day, starting oif the Tamaki Yacht Club's pavilion at 3 p.m. Several of the competitors yesterday were affected by tho wash from launches of the spectator fleet, and the executive is anxious that in the final race this afternoon caro should be taken by those in charge of motor craft to keep clear of the yachts. ?
