CRASH OVER BANK

ARMY MOTOR-LORRY DRIVER IN HOSPITAL SOFT DRINKS LOAD LOST I. BY TELEGRAPH —OWS CORRESPONDENT] TAIHAPE, Tbnrsday A light military motor-lorry went over a bank at Opaea, four miles north of Taihape, last evening, and the driver, Sergeant Harold Gillespie, aged 19, of Wanganui, received injuries. He was taken to the Taihape Hospital and his condition to-day was not serious. Sergeant Gillespie left Taihape foi the military camp at Waiouru, accompanied by Private W. T. Collerton,. and when some distance out the driver decided to return to Taihape owing to a punctured tyre. In turning the lorry skidded and plunged over a bank, falling 25ft. and coming to rest / on its side.

Private Collerton tvas pinned undet the lorry, but was able to free himself. He escaped with a few scratches" Sergeant Gillespie was thrown out oi the lorry as it left the. road and suffered concussion. The vehicle was not extensively damaged. The accident occurred a few chains from Private Collerton 's home. The lorry carried 50 dozeD bottles of soft drinks for the men at the camp and most of the bottles were broken. FALL OF 60FT. Thursday When backing to the edge of a section to dump soil removed from Garden Place Hill at the southern end of Anglesea Street, Hamilton, last evening a lorry owned by Messrs. Grinter Brothers, Limited, Auckland, and driven by Mr. A. Middleton, fell down a declivity of 60ft. Mr.' Middleton jumped clear' and was unhurt. The vehicle was extensively damaged. It was drawn back to the top cf the section by means of a winch.
