ELLERSLIE WORK

NOVICES SHAPE WELL BRITISH TALENT PROMISING VALSPEAR FINISHES STRONGLY

BY BOBRIKOFF

In the absence of several of the Te Rapa candidates, fast work was restricted at Ellerslie yesterday morning, when the best figures were recorded by the novices British Talent and Boimybello, who went smartly over half a mile. The going on the No. 1 grass track was fast.

Bronze Emerald (Cammick) ran half a mile comfortably in 53 4-ss, tlio first furlong taking 13 2-ss. Tlio Bronze Eagle tlirea-year-old has not raced up to his early promise, but he is still growing. Fleetwind (Gilchrist) was travelling very easily in front of Aero King (Wiggins) at tho conclusion of five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, the first two occupying 265. Fleetwind made the trip to Rotorua, but sho ricked herself on the eve of the meeting and could not race. She hit out freely enough yesterday. Aero King bled slightly after he worked and this may account for his sluggish showing. Valspear in Open Company

Valspear (Coon) finished strongly over five furlongs in 1.6, the first two taking 275, and his latest work suggests that ho will not bo disgraced at his first attempt in open company tomorrow. Tlio stable-mates, Royal Appellant (Buchanan) and Bright Idea (Kerr), took 1.22 for an easy six furlongs, tho last three being run in 41 2-ss. Both are in good order for their Te Rapa engagements, Royal Appellant in particular looking much improved. British Talent (Gilchrist) led Bonnybelle (Wiggins) in the . early stages of half a mile, but at tho finish in 49 4-5s there was little between them. Considering tho short time that ho has been up, it was a particularly smart gallop on the part of British Talent, who ig a three-year-old by British King from tho Australian mare, Florent. Bonnybelle was running on well and, as she is beginning to display more stamina, an early win may be expected from her. Miss Appellant and Tooley Street

Miss Appellant (Poi) led Tooley Street (Kearns), who was under a good hold, over six furlongs in 1.18 4-5, the first three being run in 395. Tlioy will probably bo seen at Te Aroha. The jumpers, Jolio Dance (Fearn) and Electric Spear (Coon), registered 1.2 1-5, finishing together. Royal Ace (Messervy) impressed more than The Trimmer (Bruce) in 1.19 3-5, the first three taking 39 3-ss. The Trimmer has not been hitting out with his customary freedom. Shy (Hearne) was too good for Aramis (Nicholson) over a round in 1.58 2-5, tho last half-mile in 545.

Windcress (Fearn) covered seven furlongs in 1.33, being assisted over the last three furlongs by the two-year-old Stonehaven (Messervy) in 39 3-ss. There was little between Pasture (Nesbit) and Tea Gong (Fearn) at the end of six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, a creditable effort. Tea Gong, who is engaged in the Trial Stakes to-morrow, is beginning to show ability. Llandaff (Dulieu) and an unnamed Vaals filly (O'Connor) were not bustled to run. three furlongs in 445. Llandaff moved well and shows promise. On the tan, Beeswing (Hearne) and Elise (Nesbit) ran the last four of five furlongs in 55 l-ss. Beeswing was lame on pulling up, but it is not serious. Hopalong (Kerr) came home the last six furlongs of a round in 1.27 1-5. He was running on strongly and is in the right order for tho hurdle events at Te Rapa. AWAPUNI EXERCISES LAUGHING LASS BRILLIANT BEAUPARTIR BEATS THE BIGOT [BY TKLKGHAFH—OWN CORRESrnNDRNT] PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday Although the plough track was not as fast as on Tuesday, some fast times were recorded at Awapuni to-day, tho best being that of Laughing Lass, who, with a light boy, ran .six furlongs in 1.15 2-5. She began brilliantly and ran the last five in 1.3 2-5. She should race well at Wanganui. Another interesting trial was that of Beaupartir (11. Ireland?) and Tho Bigot (W. J. Broughton) over a mile. The first half took 50 3-ss, and they ran the first six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, but they were stopping to complete in 1.47. Beaupartir was a shade in front at the post. It has not boon decided whether ho will start in the Wanganui Cup. Catalogue Back in Work There was some surprise when A. McDonald rode out on the track with Catalogue, who just missed being fatally electrocuted some days before the Wellington meeting last month. Catalogue looked fit and the injured knee has cleaned up well.Mr. E. L. Barnes stated that, if all goes well, Catalogue will bo given tho chance of winning another Melbourne Cup. Oratory (G. Pratt) galloped an easy five furlongs from a standing start in 1.6 4-5. She lias been nominated for tho Rangitikei meeting and is to start in the Taranaki Stakes, which may bo hor last race. La Bru (Tnttersall) and Vascones (Chaplin) sprinted half a mile in 52 3-ss, the Inst three in 38 3-ss, and Fanciful (Tattersall) and Myarion (Chaplin) ran three in 39 2-ss. W. J. McDowell was to school Hanover, hut the light was bad. Hanover crashed through the first hurdle, coming down heavily and McDowell received a shaking. However, Hanover ; showed no immediate effects of the fall. Katesbridgo (Williamson) sprinted • half a mile in 525. finishing very well. Cuddler and Aurora's Star wore speeded up in the straight, running a quarter in; 255. Florence Mills (Tn.ttrrpn.ll) looks to bo in good order for Woodville. She was not asked to do better than 1.7 for five furlongs, Good Effort by Brazil Brazil (Ireland), with Yed Prior (Broughton) and Thrasos (Anderson), worked attractively over six furlongs. They ran the first three in 38s, and I Yed Prior showed the way into tho j straight, but Brazil, going very easily, won by a neck in 1.19. Old Bill (Bowden) and Corroboree (Tattersall) kept together throughout an easy six furlongs in 1.19 2-5. Old Bill is well and Corroboree is recovering from slight lameness. Taunt a u (Ireland) heat Cnisinier (Broughton) over five furlongs in 1.8 1-5. and Moradahad (Bowden) easily covered four in 555. White Gold (Tattersall), who has been working brilliantly, was under a hold early and after the first halfmile in sis, sho came home with moro than usual dash to complete six in 1.19. Chevychase (Ireland) sprinted throe furlongs in 39 4-ss, covering the last two strongly in 25 2-ss. Sudan (Broughton) beat Rurnblo (Tattersall) over seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5. the first half in ">1 fl-os. Jt. was Sudan's best gallon for some t.iino. The two-year-olds. Millaiuout (Ireland), Newburv Queen (Broughton) and Deflation (Kannke), were given tho only gallop on tho course proper. They ran half a mile in 525, and Millament just beat Newbury Queen.
