HIKURANGI MINE
PRODUCTION RESUMED PROGRESS OF UNWATERING [FROM our own correspondent] WHANGAEEI, Thursday The unwaterhig of the flooded Hikurangi coal mine has now reached a stage where coal is being hewn for outside sale for the first time since the mine was flooded in November. When the water has been reduced to a normal level a further increase in output will be possible. $ Prior to the flooding coal was being hewn from a small drive which had been sunk at a steep grade to reach the coal seam more quickly. Meantime, work was proceeding on the opening up of a new largc-r drive, running at a lighter grade, and put in to reach the seam at a different point. November's flooding took the water from the main drive into the coal workings of the smaller drive.
