WEDDING CAKES

TOPICAL ORNAMENTS -MODERN BRIDES' TASTES UNUSUAL DECORATIONS BY KAT CAH SON A warlike note, reflecting the trend of world events, is creeping into tho sugar ornaments which decorate modern brides' wedding cakes. A London bride recently had a full .air-raid-precautions regalia topping her wedding cake, which included realistic anti-aircraft guns, aeroplanes and searchlights. This trend reveals a far cry from the days of our grandmothers, whoso wedding cakes would be surmounted with a tastefully arranged spray of artificial or wax flowers, or fruit under a cutglass tazza. It was not until the Edwardian days that sugar ornaments came into fashion, when sentimental cupids, wedding bells and horseshoes were tho favourite choice. Old-fashioned country folks' choice would be an imitation farmyard, with sheep and chickens, while the bride would be wished all happiness with handfuls of rico. Aeroplanes Popular It was not until post-war days that confetti, made by wounded returned soldiers, came into fashion. Wedding cake suppliers and the manufacturers of sugar ornaments confess to-day that there is little demand for cupids, horseshoes and wedding bells.

One of the most popular choices seems to be aeroplanes, land machines giving way to flying-boats which are replicas of those used by Imperial Airways on their Empire routes. One bride recently had a perfect replica of a submarine ornamenting her wedding cake as a compliment to her naval husband.

The craze for topical ormancnts which reflect the business of the couple concerned is sometimes carried to ridiculous extremes. There is the caso of the bride who had for years been working in a sausage factory and who requested that a sugar model of a sausage machine should adorn her wedding cake, carried out in the colours of her husband's old school tie. Overseas Demand Su<jar ornament manufacturers can comply with any request and make their copies from an original model or sketch, which are faithful in every detail.

The experts who make these ornaments aro few, and thero is a big demand for them -overseas. Samples aro flown to countries far afield, where the local choice is limited often to a conventional selection and the imported article therefore widely appreciated. Even Australia receives samples of sugar wedding cake ornaments flown there by Imperial Airways air liners.
