DRAMA FOR EMBASSY
"JEZEBEL" SEASON OPENS With its sotting in the southern States of A morion during the troubled yours preceding the civil war, the brilliant Warner Brothers' production "Jezebel" will commence its Auckland season at the Km hussy Theatre to-day. The picture is a triumph for Uette Davis, who gives an outstanding performance in an extremely difficult role. Miss Davis is well-known for her dramatic portrayals, and for her work in ".Dangerous" she received the coveted Academy Award. It is not unlikely that she will achieve the same success for her characterisation in the present picture. She takes the part of a beautiful but heartless society girl who is given the Biblical name of ".Jezebel," because she defies the tradition of the southern States. She has two suitors, one a conservative young banker and the other a handsome spendthrift. Although she is in love with the hanker, she leaves him after a trifling quarrel and goes to New York with her other sweetheart. Later, the girl realises her folly and returns to find her former lance happily married. The film is brought to a splendid climax when "Jezebel" comes to the assistance of the man she deserted when he falls a victim to the fever scourge. Henry Fonda and George Brent are well oast iu the loading male roles.
