NEW ZEALAND DEFENCE ADVOCATED BY FARMER}} TRAINING OF YOUNG MEN Tlie immediate establishment of a universal and compulsory national register for service in case of invasion was advocated at a meeting of the Auckland Provincial executive of the Farmers' Union yesterdt\v. A resolution, submitted by the Northern Wairoa sub-provincial executive, and carried by 11 votes to 6, was as follows:
"In view of the international situation we urge upon the Government that steps be taken to educate the people as to the position likelv to obtain in the event of war brineir.e a direct attack on New Zealand. We are of the opinion that such an attack could be successfully repelled only by complete and detailed national organisation on the basis of every citizen being required to render the service for which he or she is best fitted. "In order that there may be a measure of equality of sacrifice in regard to providing the necessary military forces, Ave suggest that every male between tho ages of 16 and 30 be required to undertake a period of intensive military training sufficient to fit him for active service."
