PUBLIC WORKS JOBS

FEWER MEN EMPLOYED SHEARING AND HARVESTING [BY TELEGRAPH OWN* CORRESPONDENT ] WELLINGTON, Tuesday A noticeable falling-off in the numbers of men employed on public works in various parts of tho country prompted a question to the Minister of Public Works, tho Hon. R, Semple, whether tho rate of expenditure has been curtailed. The Minister replied that while fewer men were now employed finance was not tho reason for tho curtailment. "I have been forcing men off to undertake seasonal jobs, such as shearing and harvesting," explained the Minister, "and as a result hundreds of men have gono off public works. They have been promised jobs when the farming seasonal work ends. There lias also been a drifting away of numbers to outside jobs, and we encourage that, because we do not want to carry out non-essential work. These are the only causes of any decline in the pace of construction."
