YACHT RACES

THE KAWAU REGATTA ROYAL SQUADRON'S EVENTS GOOD START FROM AUCKLAND Two races for keel yachts and one for motor-boats lo Kawau Island started from King's Wharf last evening under the control of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. There was a full sail breeze from the south when the races started, which gave the yachts a lead, down the harbour and a run to their destination. The motor-boats were sent away at 6.30 o'clock and when the last flag fell tlie Ladv Margaret crossed the line just ahead of the Lady Una, Tiriinoana and Huia. Then came the Kotomahana, Haira and Nereides. The handicaps were:—Ladv Margaret, scr; Lady Una, Tiriinoana, 20m; Nereides, 45m; Huia, 55m; Haira, 60m; Botomahana, 70m.

The result, after handicaps had been allowed, was:—Hotomahana, 1; Lady Margaret and Nereides, equal, 2. The race for the second and third division yachts started at 7 p.m. and at gunfire, the Tnngaroa crossed the line first, closely followed by Maliahi, Gloriama. Araiuoana, Ghost, Medina, Peri, Tainui and "Windward, with the rest handy.

The handicaps were:—Tainui, scr.; Araiuoana, lm; Tangaroa, sm; Windward, s.}m; Mahiki. 7m; lona, 15m; Janet, 22m; Peri, 23m; Kotuku, 25m; Oreti, 27m; Ghost, Dorothy, 29m; Minerva, Medina, 33m; Bevel, Gloriana, 36m. Tangaroa was still in the lead.as the boats rounded North Head. An excellent start was effected in the race for first division yachts, which were sent away at 7.10. All the boats were waiting for gunfire, and when the signal to start was given they crossed -the line within seconds of one another. The Ida was first away and then came the Ariki, Ngatoa, lorangi, Tamatea, Waiomo, Banger, Matia, VietcGiy, Moana, Little Jim, Tawera and Waitangi. Ariki soon passed Ida and held the lead until off Devonport, where Hanger, which had meanwhile overhauled Ngatoa, lorangi, Tamatea and Waiomo, took charge. The order of the leading boats rounding North Hehd was Banger, Ariki and lorangi. The handicaps were:—Hanger, scr; Ariki, 6m; lorangi, 8m; Matia, Tawera, 12m; Tamatea, Ngatoa, 15m; Waitangi, 20m; Moana, 22m; Ida, 23m; Victory, 25m; Little Jim, 26m; Waiomo. 273 m. The yachts had not reached their destination at an early hour this morning.

The squadron ■(rill hold its annual regatta at Kawau to-day. The auxiliary yacht Morewa, owned by Sir Ernest Davis, will be the flagship and will he moored off Mansion House Bay. Tho programme is as follows: —10 a.m., start of ladies' race (Sir Ernest Davis Cup); 2.15 p.m., start of race for first division yachts (Goldie trophy); 2.150 p.m., start of race for second and third division yachts (the Berthon Barrel and £■">).

A dance will be held at Mansion House, Kawau, this evening, vhen prizes for the ladies' race will be presented.
