BUSH FIRES SEQUEL
MANY PROSECUTIONS COURT IMPOSES FINES COMMENT BY A CORONER (Received February 3, 11.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 3 Arising out of the recent bush fires 20 persons were charged in the Ferntree Gully Court to-day with having lit fires in proclaimed areas during proclaimed periods. They were fined amounts ranging from £lO to £35. Several cases were adjourned. In another case a youth, said by a constable to be sub-normal, was remanded for seven days. Several men who were fined said they lit fires to burn breaks so as to protect their properties. A schoolboy aged 18 years, well known as a fire-fighter, said he was not aware that the regulations applied to the burning of rubbish. He was fined £lO.
The inquests into the deaths of two! fire victims at Toolang were opened at Healesville to-day and adjourned. The coroner said the person who caused the fires might yet find himself charged with manslaughter. Evidence was given that this fire later spread to Narbethorig, where it caused the deaths of six people.
