Thursday's Mass Meeting of Protest reflected the attitude of tens of thousands of listeners throughout the country. With the Town Hall itself packed and an overflow meeting of several hundred in the Concert Chamber, an audience of 3400 registered a unanimous support for the Petition. Already many more thousands have signed, and at the Meeting telegrams were received from dozens of organisations and local centres affirming support for the Petition. The Frankton Branch of the Labour Party, Public Works Department Camps, the Ohura Branch of the Labour Party, and the Miners' Union of Ohura, the Northern Wairoa Provincial Farmers' Union and a message from 1000 Huntly miners, supported the petition whole-heartedly. These were typical of upwards of sixty such messages received. Organisations like the People's Theatre and the Disabled Soldiers' Welfare Association were also represented. THIS MOVEMENT IS ENTIRELY NON-POLITICAL! IT IS a LISTENERS' PROTEST without any political or party support. If YOU are concerned to preserve freedom of speech, particularly freedom of the air, resist the whole conception of censorships and banning. H. G. Wells, but recently principal speaker at the International Science Congress at Canberra said, on leaving Australia: "Australia is a halfFascist country and will continue so till you rid yourselves of these senseless censorships. No country can be a democracy while it allows censorship of thought. Why should not every sort of opinion go out on the radio? Nobody is com- i pelled to listen. You must do something about this, £ e , r I or not you agree with Wells | complete-freedom ideal, YOU CAN SUPPORT "THE HIS- ff TORY BEHIND THE HEAD- B LINES" as a valuable, educational medium.
