EMPLOYMENT FRAUD
CHARGE AGAINST MAORI
MAINTENANCE OF CHILD [by telegraph—own correspondent] WANGANUI, Monday Charged with receiving benefits from the Employment Promotion Fund to which he was not entitled by falsely stating that a child was under his care and was being maintained by him, William Kingi Tukapua, a Maori, appeared before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day. It was stated that defendant had secured £l2 10s by his misrepresentation. A fine of £l2 10:3 and costs was imposed, defendant being allowed two months in which to pay tho fine provided that,half the amount and costs were paid within a month. The offence occurred between February 2, 1935, and December 26, 1936. Mr. A. C. AVatts, who appeared for tho Labour Department, said defendant had received 2s a week for the child from February 2, 1935, to May 30. 1936, and 4s a week from then until December 26, 1936.
