MAORI'S INJURIES
FOUND ON ROADSIDE CONDITION STILL SERIOUS BLOOD-STAINED PIECE OF WOOD [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE KAUWHATA, Monday
It is now fairly definitely established that Mr. George Kahi, single, aged 24, of Pukekohe, who was found with severe head injuries at tho side of Massey Road, To Kauwhata, at 11.30 o'clock on Saturday night, was tho victim of an assault. Inquiries were continued to-day by three Auckland detectives and local police constables. Constable D. Craigie, of Huntly, who made a search of the locality on Sunday morning, found a bloodstained pieco of sawn timber measuring 9in. by lin. and about 4ft. long in a gully about two chains from where Mr. Kahi was discovered; A small piece of the board was missing, but this was later found near by. Tho theory that Mr. Kahi was struck about tho head and shoulders with a piece of wood is substantiated by tho fact that small particles of wood liavo been removed from a severe cut across ono of the injured man's eyes. Mr. Kahi's general condition, although still serious, has shown some improvement, but it is feared that ho will lose tho sight of the eye. Describing how lie found tho injured man, Mr. W. A. Watson, taxi-driver, of Massey Road, To Kauwhata, said to-day that as he drove up Massey Road to his garage he switched on his spotlight to lot a party of Maoris, who were attending a gathering at tho house of Mr. Amo Tipuhi, know that he had returned should they want to make use of his car. Mr. Tipuhi's house stands about a quarter of a mile back from Massey Road on tho opposite side to Mr. Watson's garage. A brother of tho injured man, Mr. Thompson Kahi, and somo others came across from tho gathering as Mr. Watson was parking his car in tho garage. Ho was walking back to meet them when ho heard groans at the rjgjit of tho garage entrance. Ho struck a match and discovered Mr. George Kahi lying on the ground. About 50 Maoris were at Amo Tipuhi's house, but none of these heard anything. Mr. Tipuhi's homo is only about half a milo from the Te Kauwhata township. Massey Road is a side road which gives access to a few scattered dwellings.
