FIFTY YEARS AGO
AMERICANS AND SAMOA Popular feeling in America ran high 50 years ago over the Samoan question and it seemed likely that war might break out between the United States and Germany. Tho following; is an extract from the New Zealand Herald of January 31, 1889: "The opinion in America is crystallising against what is considered to ba a project to steal Samoa. Mr. Bayard, Secretary of State, is trying to calm tho public and declares that Germany has given no cause for going to war and also that tlfo flag insulted had not been hoisted, in assertion of American rights. He states that Cleveland, feeling that further steps involve hostility, has referred to Congress the question whether America should forcibly assert her independence in Samoa. _ „ . "It is believed that Mr. J. Blame, who will probably occupy tho position of Secretary of State in General Harrison's Cabinet, is favourable to a vigorous policy being adopted in connection with Samoa."
