DEFENCE
Sir, —Sir Ernest Davis' suggestion of a scheme for community help seems to ho an excellent and much needed one. Would it not he possible to organise a defence scheme similar to the one in Great Britain, first in Auckland, then passing to the other centres?
11' all citizens wore willing to give voluntary service to the country according to their ability, wo would feel our position in any possibly emergency not to be totally helpless. We could at least give a worthy service to the defence of democracy and freedom. It is time we, in New Zealand, awoke to the need for concerted action. If, as we all hope, the dangers of bho present are averted, could not the services of this voluntary body of men and women be used for organised social service, such as beautifying of the city, and many other kinds of necessary work? in what better way could the leisure of manv be used? I.R.
