Low prices for cereals were mainly responsible. The Dominion Bureau of Statistics states that while the 1938 wheat production was nearly double that of 1937, the average farm price was only 57 cents, as compared with 1.02 dollars last year. Thus the value of the crop was only about 12,000,000 dollars, or about £3,000,000, greater. Increases in the production of oats, barley and rye in 1938 failed to offset declines in prices and the combined value of these crops was 35,694,000 dollars, or about £8,924,000 less than in 1937. Higher prices for potatoes in 1938 resulted in a value 691,000 dollars, or about £172.800, greater than in 1937, in spite of a reduced yield. With the exception of turnips, fodder corn and sugar beets, values lor all other crops were below thoso of a year ago.
