DEFENCE
Sir, —Your loading article in Wednesday's. Hebald should lie read Iby every adult person in this country. ' Tliat we New Zealand people are living in a fool's paradise is beyond doubt. We are about to give our tiihe,~ energv and money in creating and maintaining a huge scheme called Social Security while we lave prsctically no national security whatever, We go on building roads,'railways, etc., etc., for what!' .Just a ripe plum to be picked whenever it is required. What position would this country have been in to-day if war had broken out before Britain had to humble herself and make the Munich agreement? And 1 wonder what excuses our politicians would have tried to make to us for our position. Whether we require warships, submarines, or bombers, or all three, is a matter for experts, but it appears certain that Australia and this country will have to stand or fall together. The sooner they get together and' devise a national security scheme the better, even though we have to tighten our belts for a few years. Most other countries have -already done so, unfortunately for vis, but it would be an insurance and security that every thinking man and woman will be'prepared to pay for. if not for them- . selves, then for posterity and the security of our birthright.
