HUGE EXPENDITURE £230,000,000 IN 1939 PLEA TO THE WORKERS SPEEDIER PRODUCTION By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright PARIS, Dec. 28 "We are determined to draw up a new national balance-sheet after the first quarter of 1939," said M. Reynaud, French Minister of Finance, in defending the Budget before the Senate. He added that drastic cuts in expenditure and higher production and revenue were vitally necessary. "France cannot continue oil the present scale of living and arm herself," added the Minister. "Our military expenditure in 1939 will total £230,000,000. Our obligations from tho Great War are still £85,000,000. "Wo arc going to see thousands of millions of francs thrown into tho abyss of national defence, but can wo bo satisfied when, in spite of this, it has taken IS months to build a submarine compared with Germany's eight months ? "It is imperative to work more productively if wo desire to improve our position."
