TRAM RECEIPTS

CHRISTMAS PERIOD AN INCREASE OF £328 LESS TRAFFIC ON HOLIDAYS . , Although the receipts of the Auckland tramways for Christmas Day and the two following days, which were whole holidays, showed a decrease of £So3, compared with the same days & year ago, returns for the whole Christmas period up to yesterday morning revealed an increase of £326. The general managej of the Auckland Transport Board, Mr. A. E Ford, said yesterday that bad weather cn Christmas Day and Boxing Day w«» mainly responsible for the reduced business on the actual holidays. Under the conditions prevailing there was little picnic traffic, and the attendance at the races on Boxing Day was also affected. Tuesday, although a fine day, failed to equal last year's returns; The actual receipts, with those for 1937 in parentheses, were as follows; —December 25, £692 (£1026); December 26, £2045 (£2364); December 27, £1646 (£1846). Mr. Ford pointed out, however, that, as Christmas Day fell this year on a Sunday, the returns for the individual days were not strictly comparable. He added that the long pie-Christmas shopping day, which fell on Friday in_both years, produced £2835 on this occasion, compared with £27/9 a year ago. The staff, he said, had worked cheerfully and well, and there had been no accidents involving trams since the beginning of the holiday period.
