DECISION OF FINALS MEN'S EVENT TO ROACH SUCCESS OF MISS BUCKLEY [by telegraph—own correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday Interesting play was witnessed today in the concluding stages of the Rotorua Lawn Tennis Club's annual open Christmas tournament. The finals in the various sections attracted large galleries throughout the day. The men's championship title was won by L. Roach, of Hamilton, who indicated from the commencement of the tournament that he would bo one of the last to fight out the issue. His opponent, B. Dold, of Auckland, also played well and Roach had to reproduce all ho knew to secure the title in a four-set match. Miss C. Buckley, Waiuku. was too. steady for the young Auckland player, Miss M. Hodges, in tlio final of the Jadies championship singles. Both players gavo a sound exhibition of backhand play, but Miss Buckley several times drove fast shots along the lines on her opponent's forehand, while Miss Hodges frequently stood flat-footed and was unable to return short 6hots over the net. Miss Buckley won in straight sets, 6—4, 0—3.0—3. The ladies' doubles championship was won bv the Hodges sisters, who beat Misses M. Knight and J. Nagle, Rotorua. Ihe two Rotorua player, however, scored a wellearned victory in the ladies' handicap doubles bv defeating Misses Pawson and Low, of Auckland. Miss Nagle, with A. WAIKATO TITLES TOURNAMENT AT NEW YEAR £from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday Large entries have been received for tho Waikato championship tennis tournament, which will be held at the Rostrevor Street Courts, Hamilton, next Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Tho men's handicap singles event claims tho greatest number of competitors, 4G entries having been received, while 35 pairs will tako part in tho men's handicap doubles. In the championship events 20 entries ha'o been received for the men's singles and t'ao same number for tho mens doubles, whil'j 12 have entered for the ladies' singles and 10 for the ladies' doubles. This tournament has been held at Easter in former years, but owing to tho unfavourable conditions which usually prevail at this time, it was decided to hold tho tournament earlier.

MARLBOROUGH EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALISED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] BLENHEIM, Thursday The feature of the Marlborough lawn tennis championships which liavo just been concluded is that this year the titles all were won by Marlborough players. It is the first time this has happened for many year, outside competition this season not being so strong as usual. Nevertheless, tho standard of play was high, and closelycontested finals were the order. Tho new men's singles champion is V. Congdon, of tho Marlborough Club, who defeated his clubmate, H. Fuller, o —7, (i —3, G —l, in a long drawn-out match with practically every gamo going to deuce. In tho men's doubles Full and L. Orr had an easy win over Congdon and C. Newman, o—l,0 —1, «—O, tho latter pair being completely out of touch. Miss McWhinney defeated Miss Lloyd, 4 —<i ? g—s, <! —3, in the women's singles, making an exceptionally good recovery in tho second set. Miss Lloyd put up a remarkable performance. She is a schoolgirl, and featured in tho semi-finals or finals of every event in which she entered. She will compete at tho junior national championships at Wanganui in January.
