KING'S BIRTHDAY

MARIONETTE SHOW PRINCESSES' YOUNG GUESTS LONDON, Dec. 21 On the King's 43rd birthday the Throne of England was moved to enable the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret and their 100 youthful guests to enjoy a marionette show in the Throne Room. The audience included the children of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, others belonging to personal friends and members ot the Royal household, members of the Palace troop of Girl Guides and Brownies, and also some grown-up people. All laughed at the marionettes, which were worked by Elsa Lanchester's brother. The King and Queen took back seats so that the little guests should see better. The show was Queen Mary's idea. Tea was served, the table being piled high with crackers and a monster Christmas cake. The King and Queen joined in the competitive games, and the King presented the prizes. A fireworks display was then given in the gardens. As official celebrations of the King's birthday occur in the summer, it was decided that yesterday's anniversary should, in every respect, be a family affair. There was no birthday cake.
