MUCH MOTOR TRAFFIC

AUCKLAND HTGIfWAYS VEHICULAR FERRIES BUSY DRIVERS' ROAD COURTESY Motor traffic on all highways in the vicinity of Auckland was particularly heavy during the past three days. Hundreds of Auckland residents left by car for various parts of the Dominion 011 Saturday, while 011 Christmas Day and yesterday there were many travellers both to and from the city. A large number of those wliA left on Saturday went to northern resorts, and, although the vehicular ferries to Devonport plied across the harbour as fast as they could be loaded, there was a long queue of cars waiting for transport most of the day. At one stage the queue reached back to the waterfront road and then nearly as far as King's "Wharf. To avoid delays many motorists elected to travel by road around the head of the harbour.

Traffic was not quite so heavy' 011 Christmas Day, but it increased again yesterday. A peak period was reached on the Great South Road between 10 a.m. and .11 a.m., during which time ] :i()0 vehicles passed a tally point on the concrete highway north of PapaIt urn.

According to Automobile Association reports, the great majority of holiday motorists conducted themselves very well. This opinion was expressed also by a traffic inspector. There were, however, a few who persisted in creating dangerous situations through impatience and through pushing, out of lines of traffic when the roads were crowded.

Considerable congestion on busy highways was occasionally caused bv slow driving, an official of the Automobile Association said last night. Invariably, he added, those motorists who proceeded in a dilatory manner held to the crown of the road and made it very difficult for faster traffic to overtake and pass with safety.
