FATE OF CYCLIST

COLLISION WITH CAR FATE OF YOUNG MAN GOING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] P.UKEKOHE, Thursday A motor-cyclist received fatal head injuries when his machine was involved in a collision with a motor-car at Higgins' Bend on the Great South Road, about four miles south of Mercer, just after three o'clock this afternoon. The victim was: — Mr. Walter John Crowe, aged 21, tractor driver, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Crowe, of Linton, Palmerston North. Mr. Crowe, who was employed at the Lone Kauri Camp, Piha, left Auckland at about 2 p.m. to-day for Palmerston North in company with another motor-cyclist, Mr. Peter H. Hanson. It was the intention of the pair to spend Christmas at their homes, which are both in the Palmerston North district. Mr. Crowe was about two miles ahead of Mr. Hanson, who stopped at Pokeno for benzine, when tho accident occurred. Tlio car, which was proceeding from Huntly to Auckland, was driven by Mr. John Ronald Vogt, of Wynyard Street, Auckland. Tho impact threw Mr. Crowe to tho roadway. Assistance was given to the injured man by Mr. Vogt and passing motorists. Mr. Vogt then drove to Mercer, where ho telephoned Dr. S. Douglas, of Pukekohc, and the St. John ambulance station in Auckland. Mr. Crowe had succumbed to his injuries, however, when tho doctor arrived. An inquest will bo opened at Pukekoho to-day. *
