EPSOM TRAINING

VISITORS USE GEASS LAWN DERBY AND TOORAK SPEED DEVELOPED ON DIRT STAR PRONTO FINISHES WELL BY ABAYDOS Visiting horses had the use of the outside of the course proper at Epsom yesterday. The Auckland Cup horses Lawn Derby and Toorak, accompanied by Colonel Grattan. who will race on tlio second and third days, ran their last half in about 1.10. Reception, 1.11, and Big Kauri, 1.12, gave good trotting displays. The dirt provided good footing. Noble Prince and Star Pronto shared tho honours with half a mile in 1.5. Other line efforts were those of Glori- ! etta, 1.5 1-5, Forest Jewel, 1.6, Eighteen Carat, 1.6 1-5, Sequoia, 1.6 3-5, Silver Watch and Lucky Love, 1.7, Bedford and Vanora, 1.7 3-5, Wliitstone, Handieapper, Kewpie's Bingen, jMaiidalay and Pukoiniro, 1.8. Colonel Grattan (V. Looming), Toorak (J. Naylor) and Lawn Derby (W. J. O'Shea) went from the two miles as named, and they reached the milo and a-iialf in 3.40. Toorak moved to tho leader, and at the quarter post Lawn Derby began a run which ho carried on to finish slightly in front in 4.19 3-5. The champion paced beautifully, running the last half in 1.9 3-5 and the quarter in 34 l-ss. Wheeler) before going a utile, and they finished together, running the last milo and a-quarter in 3.7. GOOD WORK IN SECTIONS NOBLE PRINCE SHOWS DASH Forest Jewel (S. M. August) began more quickly than Noble Prince (J. McKendrickj at the mile and a-half, a ill approaching the mile post they were joined by Lucky Love (W. Willetts), in saddle, who took Forest Jewel to the mile in 2.20. Noble Prince came up in the straight to win well in 3.25. Although his display was patchy, Noble Prince finished with dash and was going away at the end. Forest Jewel went 3.26, and she ran on gamely. Lucky Love had a good lead two furlongs from home, but stop led quickly in the last half-furlong, taking 2.16 2-5. He does not work as well in saddle as in harness. Whitstono (L. Laver), going to the lialf-milo in 1.20, completed a mile and a-half in 3.40. He ran the last two halves in "1.10, 'giving a solid displav. , Canadian (C. M. Morrison) covered two miles in 4.53, the last half showing 1.10. Ho has done well since the Waikato meeting, and will race on the second and third days. After an easy mile, Bedford (D. Smith) jumocd away smartly from the milo and a-quarter to run the first six furlongs in 1.42. He went the next quarter in 335, but took 2.50 to complete the journey. Bedford hag benefited by racing and he should pay his way at the meeting. GOOD TWO-MILE TASK GLORIETTA FINISHES WELL Gipsy Light (G. Cole) and Petite Jewel (W. H. Andrews) left the two miles ahead of Eighteen Carat (C. M. Morrison) and Glorietta (R. B. Flood), but a break put Petito Jewel in therear. Eighteen Carat headed Gipsy. Light, to lead to the mile and a-half in 3.37. In the straight Glorietta came fast to beat' Eighteen Carat in 4.43. Glorietta, who has improved with racing at Hamilton, ran her last mile in 2-16, Eighteen Carat, who went 4.43 1-5, again gave a solid display. Petite Jewel was running on solidly in the concluding stages after losing ground and lie will have prospects in tho 4.48 class the second day. In going 4.47, Gipsy Light was responsible for a good effort. Star Pronto (B. Dyer) in his second task, ran tho first half in 1.14, the mile and a-half .in 3.39 and reached the finishing post in 4.44, He revelled in his work and his final sprint was one of his best for some time. Gold Kip (C. M. Morrison)-conceded Hiptiflc (H. A. Avorill) one second from the milo and a-lialf, and in spite of two lapses, ran the journey in 3.40. Fernbrook Lass (L. Laver), unhoppled, ai'te.r going easily for a mile and a-quarter in 3.5, broke into a gallop, at which gait she traversed another mile and a-half. Fernbrook Lass docs well on this style of training. Two miles free-legged was tho portion of Equipoise (S. M. August), his best section being a half in 1.15. Hp is in excellent condition. SILVER WATCH ALL THE WAY FINE EFFORT OF MANDALAY Silver Watch (L. J. Ma honey), Stargum (W. Head) and Handieapper (G. H. Stubbs) left the mile and a-half at intervals of one second, and Silver Watch won well in 3.27. Ho ran the last milo and a-quartor in 2.50. Handieapper, who was iinhopplyd) ran 3.27 2-5. Don Walla (N T . Cunningham) was doing better than Auto Bingen (G. H. Phipps) at the end of a milo and a-half in 3.50, the last half showing 1.12. Mandalay (D. 0. Jones), from a standing start, ran a mile and a-quarter in 2.51. The first six furlongs took 1.43. j Mandalay will race on the second and third days. Fisher* (A. Paton) gave Dick Redmond (A. T. Newdick) three and a-half seconds start and a good beating oyer a milo and a-quarter in 2.53. I'lshor was free-legged,. and. sprinted the last three furlongs in 51s. Although lie trotted tire journey in 3.0, Dick Redmond was not going square, and took 1.14 to run tho last half-mile. Ho appeared soro after the work-out. Vanora (L. J. Mahoney) and Pukemiro (W Fleming) went, away at the mile and a-half, the former taking charge eorlv to win all the way in 3.30 '3-5, after doing 2.23 for the first riiile. He is signalling an early return to form. Pukemiro recorded 3.31. Bingen Sun (W. Head) and Worthy Qmest (G. H. Stubbs) were together in 3.38 after a milo and a-half. Worthy Quest, who ran tho last milo ' and a-quarter in 2.59 3-5, showed improvement\in stamina.
