NO STATE AID AT PRESENT [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHAKATANE, Wednesday The Whakatane County Council received a letter this week from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. 11. gemple, in reply to an inquiry for information as to the details of any policy the Government might have adopted in connection with the sealing of county roads other than State and main highwavs. the Minister stated that, in view of the heavy commitments incurred in respect of settlement rood metalling and the greatly increased subsidies being made available to county councils generally for this class of work, it had not been possible to offer county councils subsidies toward the cost ot tar-sealing county roads, as distinct from State and main highways. In the circumstances, the Minister recretted that he was unahle to let the council have any favourable advice on tho question at present.
