TROTTING TRIALS

SPRINTING AT EPSOM VANORA BEST HALF-MILE SOLID APPEARANCE OF TOORAK BY ABAYDOS Rain showers and a strong wind, which at times reached the force of half a gale, made conditions unpleasant at Epsom yesterday, when the course ■proper, with the poles 40ft. out, and the dirt track were used. Honours again went to Vanora with half a inile in 1.8 3-5. Other good sprints were recorded by Pukemiro, Kewpie's Bingen, Parishioner and Great Sonoma, 1.9, Bedford, 1.9 3-5, Forest Jewel, 1.9 4-5, Silk Lady, Kewpie's Crest, Star Pronto and Arapai, 1.10, Tho best ou the dirt track were Fernbrook Lass, 1.5 3-5, and Eighteen Carat; 1.6. Pukemiro (W. Fleming) led Vanora to the six furlongs in 1.52, but at tho mile tho latter drew level and went on to win nicely in 3.0 3-5, Pukemiro going 3.1. Vanora displayed dash when sprinted. Noble Prince (J. McKendrick), after starting practice, went away from the two miles, reaching the mile in 2.25, but he then slowed up, taking 4.53. The second half, run iu 1.10, was his best. Lucky Love (W. Willetts) worked two miles, assisted over the last mile and a-quarter by Mandalay (D. O. Jones), who was slow to go away, but finished alongside Lucky Love in 3.9. Mandalay, who is improving, ran the last half in 1.12 2-5. Lucky Ijove was not taxed and took 5.17.

SILK LADY IMPROVES TRIAL WITH PETITE JEWEL Petite Jewel '(J. Funncll) made play from Silk Lady (W. H. Andrews) for the first nine furlongs of a mile and a-half, but the latter'finished on terms in 3.50. Sills Lady, who is well conditioned, sprinted impressively. Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell) led Bedford (F. Herring) for a mile and a-half, and, after taking 40s for the first quarter, they passed the mile in 2.35. Forest Jewel scored narrowly in 3.45 and drew attention to her prospects in the St Heliers Handicap. Bed-' ford also is very fit. After a mile and a-half on the dirt, Star Pronto (B. Dyer) paced two miles on the grass to record 5.14, improving to return 1.10 for the last half-mile, without being bustled. Silver Watch (L. J. Mahoney), Kewpie's Queen (W.. Gee) and Kewpie's Crest (J. Gee) left the mile and a-half at intervals of two seconds. Going to the mile in 2.39, Silver Watch beat Kewpie's Crest in 3.50 3-5. The grey is improving with each run., Kewpie's Crest recorded 3;47, the last half in 1.10; - t Vtj; Big Kauri (W. A. Price), paired with Bismuth (A. McGarry), was eased after a mile and a-half, the other covering two miles at a 2.40 rate, tho last half in 1.15. Big Kauri covered one halfmile in 1.16. - ROWE MEMORIAL TROTTERS i ARAPAI'S SOUND WORK-QUT I Arapai (B. Liddall) .took 40s for the first two furlongs/ but, tro.ttirig in fine ! style, completed a mile and a-half in 3.45, the last half in 1.10. It -was a sound effort and on a; dry track he has prospects in the Rowo Memorial Handicap. Great Sonoma (C. M. Morrison) trotted two miles in 4/53. The first mile showed 2.30 and the final half Great Sonoma, who, is in good' heart, made no mistakes and is favoured for his next engagement. » .. ! From a standing start Stalky (T. Roe) • led Mute (J. T. Paul) jto the/ mile in 2.36. He broke badly at the top. but was almost on terms with Mute at the end of a mile and a-half in 3.50; Stalky, who showed speed in the final sprint, benefited by racing at Hamilton. Pirate's Last (L. J. Mahoney) worked two miles in 5.18. • After passing the mile in 2.42. he broke badly and made a further lapse while trotting the last half in 1.18. He was disappointing.

Pink Lady (B. Dyer) trotted two miles in. 5.16, coming home the final section in 1.16. The roan mare is carrying more condition than usual.

Dick Redmond (A. T. Newdick) led from Bingen Sun (W. Head) at the mile and a-half, but there was little between them at the mile in 2.37. Bingen Sun was first home in 3.53, under a good pull. He has never looked better and will be respected in the Rowe Handicap. Dick Redmond trotted more solidly than in his most recent tasks. POST HASTE RECOVERS FORM EASY MILE FOR LAWN DERBY • Lawn: Derby (W. J. O'Shea) was given-pacing exercisq over a couple .of circuits, with an occasional sprint. Hd thea jumped: away at the mile, and, taking 1.20 to the half; finished up' in 2.35. The champion' thrives on easy tasks. ' ' Kewpie's Bingen (C. G". Smith) took off one second' before Parishioner (L. Laver) from the mile arid a-half, but the latter finished on .terms in 3.43. They were together at the mile, and covered the last |ialf in 1.9f-a fine effort for novices. Smith will drive Kewpie's Bingen in the December Handicap. Post Haste (L. J. Mahoney) made a much better showing than-on Saturday by working; a mile and a-quarter in 3.7 2-5. He took 39s for the first two furlongs and ran the last half-mile in 1.11 2-5. Gold Kip (C. M. Morrison), Autumn Lit (G. H. Stubbs), Masterman (T. Roe), Gipsy Light (G. Colo) and Riptide (H. A. Averill) went from the milo and a-half, but the last-named refused to strike a gait. Gold Kip lost the lead by a break, Gipsy Light having charge at tho'milis in 2.34 and winning easily .in 3.48. This was one of her best efforts for some time. Autumn Lu and Gold Kip finished together in 3.52. Riptido went half a mile in 1.14. He still races off the mark. Gay Moko (L. J. Mahoney) went away nearly two seconds ahead of Canadian (C.- M. Morrison) for a mile , and a-half, and, trotting well, maintained her advantage throughout to return 3.52 and run the last half in 1.15. Slio gave a surprisingly good display. Cnnailian ran tho last half in 1.14. Great Surprise (L. Laver) hit out resolutely to trot the last half of 12 furlongs in 1.12 2-5. Ho is making progress. Tho Clip candidate Toorak, with Connenora on the lead, was given strong jogging on the > dirt. Toorak's solid appearance drew , favourable comment.
