RELIEF SCHEME

FUTURE IN DOUBT NO FORWARD COMMITMENTS POSITION AFTER DECEMBER 31 A reply to a request that the services of men employed under No. 13 scheme on 100 per cent wage subsidy should be extended until March 31 of next year was received by the Mount Eden Borough Council last night from the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, writing as Minister of Labour, through Mr. A. S. Richards, M.P. for Roskill. Mr. Armstrong said he regretted that pending a general review of the scheme no commitments extending beyond December 31 were being entered into in the meantime. The town clerk, Mr. A. D. Jack, said the position was that the 132 men employed by the council under the schemo would cease work on Friday and would be entitled to a week's holiday, plus the four statutory holidays, on pay. Those who had worked shorter periods would have proportionately shorter holidays on pay, but the amounts they received would bo made up to tlxo sustenance rate where necessary. 1 In reply to a suggestion that before the men started work again after the holidays an assurance should be obtained from the Labour Department that the work would bo paid for. the Mr. R. J. Mills, said he thought there was no doubt that the i assurance would bo forthcoming.
