WARDRESS SHOWS DASH ARGENTIC SHADES KILROBE COUNTERBLAST'S SMART FIVE DEFAULTER AND WILLIE WIN '[BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT ] CHRISTCHUUCH, Thursday A strong north-west wind contributed to fast times at Riccarton today, especially over the last half-mile of tho track. The wind increased in force after breakfast and in conscqucneo some smart sprints were recorded. The outside of the course proper was again available and there was also a good deal of work on tho plough. The only gallop tho reverse way round was accomplished by Willie Win and Defaulter, who covered nine furlongs in 2.0 2-5, the last half-mile in 52 3-ss. Both horses should he at their best for Ellerslie. On his recent gallops Willie Win is entitled to be one of the favourites for the Auckland Cup. On tho plough Counterblast reeled off five furlongs in 1.2 1-5. Great Flight and In tho Dark ran half a niilo in 51 l-ss. Great Baby went well ovor five furlongs in 1.3 3-5. Prudent Prince, who has been suffering slightly from shin soreness, sprinted three furlongs in 38 4-ss. His stablemate, Lady Leigh, covered six furlongs in 1.18 4-5. Bit o' Blue was going better than Metal Bird at the end of six furlongs in 1.20. Gavfire recorded similar time. Wild Chase strode over six ftirolngs in 1.17 3-5. Lady Rosette and Elegy took 53s for half a mile. Improvement and Happy ' Memory followed in 51 3-ss. Sovereign Lady was sent nine, furlongs, running tho last seven in 1.30. Rebel Star and Capricious left five furlongs behind in 1.3 2-5. Night Hawk and Nightdress covered tho same ground in 1.4. Wino Card finished half a length in front of Phalanx in 1.3. Royal Chief Sprints Royal Chief was given his first sprint since returning from Melbourne, running an easy three furlongs with Moorsotis in 38 4-ss. Kilrobe led Argentic for a good portion of seven furlongs but the latter was slightly in front at the finish in 1.30 1-5. Argentic again worked worked well and his owner has been inclined to send him to contest his fourth Auckland Cup. A definite decision will be arrived at to-morrow. Tho main difficulty now will be getting a suitable rider at Ellerslie, whereas A. E. Ellis will bo available at Awapuni. Haughty Winner and Rabble were associated over seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5. Haughty Winner has done well of late and should race prominently on his North Island trip. A venal covered six furlongs in 1.19 2-5. There were several half-mile gallops on the course proper after tho interval, all assisted by a heavy following wind. The best of these was recorded by Wardress, by Lord Warden from Clink,' who beat Roro Hika and Pol Roger in 47 3-ss. Albv recorded 48s, Miss Otis and Mondessa 49 3-ss, Maka Ahi 59s and Not Out 50 3-os. Grampian and Plumage ran six furlongs in 1.17 1-5, and Maroha occupied 1.18 2-5. Dranoel, one of Mr. L. W. Storry's team, was schooled over two hurdles, acquitting himself exceptionally well. Top Rank jumped four hurdles at a strong pace. Chokebore Team Goes North Tho Chokebore . representatives for the Auckland meeting, Trench Fight, Paper Slipper and Good Passage, were shipped north to-night in charge of H. Cutts. Winning Rival did not make tho trip owing to straining a muscle earlier in the week. This was unfortunate as the Bulandshar filly was expected to make a bold showing against the best of the North Island two-year-olds, especially over six furlongs in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Financiere ricked herself when galloping on the plough early this week, and it is feared that she will miss the West Coast circuit. She has been unlucky this season, having met with mishaps just as her form suggested success. Star Vaal, looking bright and well, strode over a circuit. Bulwark ran four furlongs in 52 2-ss. Rulotto beat Foxtoon by half a length in 50s. Galloping Acre sprinted the last two furlongs of a round. Aynlio executed a good gallop by running five furlongs in 1.4 1-5. Foxmond completed three furlongs in 38 1-ss. Ma/.ir went a leisurely round then broke awav at the six-furlong mark, reaching tin; post lull of running in 1.11 4-5. He then trotted a further circuit. Noitaro (Keesing), who looks very fit, ran four furlongs in 49 4-ss. Golden Sheila, after traversing six furlongs at half-pace, ran three down the straight in 38 l-ss. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB ACCEPTANCES DUE TO-DAY Acceptances for the handicap events on the first day of (lie Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting and final payments for the Queen's Plate, Great Northern Foal Stakes, Great Northern Derby and Royal Stakes are duo with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spenco, at 5 p.m. to-day. TE AROIIA JOCKEY CLUB STAKES FOR ANNUAL RACES Tho stakes for the To Aroha Jockey Club's meeting on February 25 and 27 have been fixed at C 6050, an average of approximately £3BO per race. The Herries Memorial Cup again carries a stake of £IOOO and a gold cup valued at £'so, while for the Waihou Handicap, the six furlolig sprint, the stake is £SOO. The President's Handicap, 1-} miles, onrries a stake of £6OO and the Farewell Handicap, six furlongs, is worth £IOO. No race on the programme is worth less than £250 exclusive of sweepstakes.
