TASMAN AIR BASE

REQUIREMENTS NOT. KNOWN HARBOUR BOARD WAITING Although it has as yet received no official communication from the Government as to the requirements for a temporary base for transtasman flyingboats at Auckland, the Auckland Harbour Board is holding itself in readiness to do what is necessary as soon as the plans for the base are communicated to it. The board is proceeding meanwhile with the raising of the eastern breakwater by means of caissons, to provide an area of sheltered water on the western side. According to the Minister of Dofence, the Hon. F. .Tones, it is hoped that it will be possible to commence building early in January. The site chosen for a temporary base for the Tasman service is immediately to the west of the Pan American Airways buildings. ... . Plans for the Tasman base outlined by the Minister at Dunedin on Tuesday indicate that a substantial amount of work "ill be involved before the whole base is ready for use. The construction of the Pan American base, which comprises only temporary buildings planned to serve for a comparatively short time, took a considerable period, and it would appear that an early start on the new base is essential if it is to be finished in time for the inauguration of the service.
