STATE TIMBER MILL

WH AKAREWAREWA FOREST CONTRACTOR BEGINS WORK [by telegraph OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Wednesday Preliminary work has been commenced by the contractor, Mr. N. Cole, of Auckland, toward the erection of a State mill and also buildings for creosoting posts and poles and the making of l.oxes in the Whakarewarcwa State forestry plantations at Waipa, about five miles from Rotorua. The mill is designed to have a daily output of 30,000 ft. of timber, which, it is stated, will be the largest output of any mill in the Dominion. It will be equipped with modern machinery operated electrically from a power-house to be erected near by. The machinery for the mill will all be on the lower floor, with the cutting floor above and chutes provided to carry away the sawdust. The logs will be hauled up by a special conveyor, an interesting innovation being a log pond to enable the easy sorting ol logs for cutting purposes. A four-roomed residence is also to he erected, and later, before the mill is in operation, hutments for the men employed will be necessary. The time stipulated for the present contract is six months.
