WOMAN SEAMSTRESS
MAKER OF PARACHUTES Sewing is generally considered as an entirely feminine occupation, but the sewing of parachutes is not a job usually undertaken by women. Mrs. V. Chard, of Sydney, is an experienced seamstress, but making parachutes is something new to her, and'she has been on the. job only a few months. During that time Mrs. Chard has made five packs and is now* working on the last three canopies to fit inside them. The work is difficult, as such care is necessary. There is a great deal of machining to do, for there are 24 gores in a parachute and four panels in each gore, making altogether about 600 ft. of seams. The parachutes aro cut out by Mr. Ben Turner, well-known Australian parachutist, and when Mrs. Chard has sewn them ho examines every stitch in every seam.
