NOK.THCOTE DISPLAY WAITEMAT A CLUB'S SHOW MANY COLOURFUL GLADIOLI The summer show of the Waitemata Horticultural Society opened by the president, Dr. K. H. Holdgate, at Northcote on Saturday was most successful. The outstanding feature was the large and colourful collection of gladioli. The champion bloom in the show was rhe Picardy gladiolus exhibited by Mr. C. Chapman, of Ruakaka, North Auckland,""who was the successful competitor in the championship, staging 1G varieties of gladioli, and winning the Royal Horticultural Society's bronze medal and the Waitemata Society's Silver Challenge Cup. Among the amateurs, Mr. W. G. Smith, of Birkenhead, was successful, winning the Royal Horticultural Society's bronze medal and the Waitemata Cup. Half of the 200 entries in the children's section were from members of the Children's Garden Circle, comprising pupils from seven schools. The judges were Mrs. Morley Bell, of Howiek (decorative section), and Mr. R. L. Thornton, of Auckland. The principal awards were as "follows: — GLADIOLI Open Championship.—Not less than 32 nor more than 18 spike 3, large-flowered type, in not less than six distinct varieties, nor more than two spikes of any one variety: C. Chapman, of Ruakaka, 3 ; G. K. Gilliam, of New Lynn, 2; C. A. H. Ledingham, of Papatoetoe, 3. Six distinct varieties, one spike of each, large-flowered type: C. A. Ledingham, 1; G. K. Gilliam, 2; W. J. Wernham, 3. Six distinct varieties, one spike of each, priiiiulinus or primulinus graridiflorus: G. Iv. Gilliam, 1; C. Chapman, 2. Bowl of largeflowered gladioli, any varieties, arranged with foliage or grass: Mrs. H. N. Lecfe, 1. Amateur (North Shore residents only).—Six distinct varieties, one spike of each, largeflowered type: W. G. Smith, 1. Bed, largeflowered: W. G. Smith, 1; W. J. Wernham, 2. Pink: W. A3. Smith, 1.
