GREAT EXPLOSION
40,000 TONS OF ROCK MONTHS' WORK FOR^QUARRY V —— *' <•> BLASTING -NEAR TUAKAU Over 40,000 tons of rock were blasted out of the face at Smeed's Quarry, on the western bank of the Waikato River above Tuakau, at about 4 p.m. yesterday. About 3.J tons of explosives were fired in the base of the quarry. The explosives had been placed in nine pockets constructed at intervals through the foot of the fact;. The explosion lifted a great area of the face about four feet. The rock fell as a shattered mass of spawls, which will keep the crushers at the quarry fed for from six to eight months.
